What columns does the CSV file contain?

Every subtitle cue becomes one row with five columns: index , type , start , end and text . index - the cue counter, starting at 0 type - the kind of entry, which is cue for regular subtitles start and end - timestamps in HH:MM:SS,mmm format, for example 00:01:23,456 text - the subtitle text, including any inline markup that was in the file This is exactly the layout our CSV to SRT Converter expects, so you can edit the CSV and convert it straight back to SRT.

Which CSV delimiter can I choose?

Comma is the default. You can also convert with a semicolon, a vertical bar or a tab as the delimiter - useful when your subtitle text itself contains commas, or when the spreadsheet software you use expects semicolons. There is also a quoting option: leave it on to wrap every non-empty value in quotes (the safest choice for text that contains the delimiter), or switch it off for a bare, unquoted CSV.

Can I convert a WebVTT file to CSV as well?

Convert SRT subtitle files to CSV so every cue becomes a row you can open in a spreadsheet, load into a database, or feed to a script. The converter splits each subtitle into its number, start time, end time and text, and writes them as separate columns.

CSV is the format to pick when the file is going somewhere other than a person's screen - a translation memory, a data pipeline, a diff against a previous version. If you just want to read and edit the subtitles by hand, SRT to Excel gives you the same columns in a spreadsheet.

What the CSV File Looks Like

The first line is a header row and every line after it is one subtitle cue. Column names are written in lower case:

index - the cue counter. It starts at 0.
type - the kind of entry. Regular subtitles are marked cue.
start - when the subtitle appears, as HH:MM:SS,mmm.
end - when it disappears, in the same format.
text - the subtitle text, including any inline markup such as <i> that was in the original file.

Timestamps keep the comma before the milliseconds, which is why quoting values is the safer default in a comma-separated file.

How to Convert SRT to CSV

Upload your SRT file with the file picker above.

Decide on quoting. Leaving Always quote all non-empty fields on is the safe choice, because subtitle text is full of commas and quotation marks. Turn it off for a bare, unquoted file.
Optionally switch on Join multiline text with spaces to keep each cue on a single line.

Converting the CSV Back to Subtitles

The column layout produced here is exactly what our CSV to SRT converter expects, so nothing has to be renamed on the way back. Keep the index, start, end and text headers, edit the text, and convert. Subtitles are renumbered from 1 in row order, so an index column that starts at 0 is corrected for you.

One thing to watch if you open the CSV in a spreadsheet first: format the start and end columns as plain text before saving, otherwise the spreadsheet may rewrite 00:01:23,456 into a clock value of its own choosing.

SRT (SubRip Text) stores subtitles as plain text: a sequence number, a start and end timecode, then one or more lines of dialogue, repeated for every cue.
