Convert AIS JSON to Excel

1. Log in to the income tax e-filing portal and open Annual Information Statement (AIS) under Services.
2. On the AIS tile, download the JSON (the file made for the AIS Utility).
3. Upload the .json file above and enter your AIS password: your PAN followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, for example ABCDE1234F01011990.
4. Click Run Conversion and download the Excel workbook.

You do not need to install the AIS Utility, and there is nothing to set up.

The AIS lists what banks, employers, companies, mutual funds and other reporting entities told the income tax department about you for the year. Before you file your return it pays to check it line by line, and a spreadsheet makes that easy:

• Reconcile before filing - match salary, interest and dividends against your own records and your ITR.
• Check every deductor - see the TDS from each employer, bank and payer, quarter by quarter.
• Capital gains - list every sale of shares and mutual fund units with its sale value and cost.
• Share with your CA - send a workbook anyone can open, instead of a file only the AIS Utility reads.

• A Summary sheet with your PAN, the assessment year, the financial year and a record count per sheet, so each client's workbook is easy to tell apart.
• General Information - Part A of the AIS, one field per row.
• An Information Summary with one row per information source: category, code, description, source, count and amount.
• One sheet per part and information category, for example B1 Salary, B1 Interest from deposit, B2 Interest from savings bank, B2 Sale of securities and units and B3 Payment of taxes.
• One row per transaction, led by the source that reported it, with the column names of the AIS.
• Amounts as numbers, so totals and formulas work immediately. Codes, account numbers and dates stay exactly as written.

The portal locks the AIS JSON with the same password the AIS Utility asks for: your PAN followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no spaces. Companies, firms and other non-individuals use the date of incorporation or formation instead. Enter it in the Password option before you run the conversion. It is used only to unlock the file for this conversion and is not saved to your account.

If the file does not open, check the date of birth as it appears on your PAN, and download the AIS JSON again if the file was changed or cut short.
